Grandpa Burrows

On Wednesday, January 26, 2011, Richard's father passed away in his sleep. He had dementia for over three years and knew that it would be "the day" at some point, but it was still surprising. Even Richard's Mom who was sleeping on the couch next to him, did not get to say good-bye. He just slipped away with no warning.

After the initial shock and first couple of days, family started pouring in. All of Richard's eight siblings and their families came from near and far. Being with all of the family, made the loss a lot easier.

We had a couple of family dinners on top of the viewing, funeral, and graveside service. Cousins laughed and played and shared stories about their Grandpa. Remembering him at his prime made it seem somehow okay for us to loose him, so he can be in that prime condition again. Although, I will always be sad that my children did not get to know their Grandpa and that my husband no longer has a father here on Earth.

Although tears were shed and it was freezing on the day of the funeral, it seemed quite perfect. All nine children participated and did a great job celebrating their father's life. Amongst the tears, lots of laughing was had as we enjoyed the funny stories of this incredible man. He was quirky and did things his own way. He was extremely intelligent and figured out how to fix everything (whether it was the right way or not was not the question). I never really got to know the true Robert Burrows, but I did know his sense of humor. Even when he was not talking anymore, he would laugh at jokes or funny things going on.

I always heard about his unusual food options. He always ate healthy and mixed things that normally don't get mixed together. His two sisters got a beautiful flower arrangement for the day with broccoli in it to honor this about him. This is Richard's oldest sister smelling the broccoli after the graveside service.

We will miss loving and serving our Dad and Grandpa, but we know there was a great a reunion with his parents, brother, and first wife (who died of cancer after ten years of marriage) in heaven. We are so thankful for our knowledge of life after death and eternal families.

So Funny!

I know, three posts in one day?! Craziness! I would like to say that the four loads of laundry that need to be done, a sleeping (and teething, so cranky and sad) baby, and a 3-year-old that is more than willing to watching movies all day; can be thanked for me finally taking the time to blog. Now that I have blogged Christmas and Christmas Eve, I just wanted to write down a few of the funny things that are being said around our house. Well, you could consider it annoying or even naughty, but to get through Nelson's "I'm right. You're wrong." stage still sane, I would just like to think of them as funny.

We hear the phrase, "No, (insert parent's name here). It's not (insert word), it's (insert his word)." All day long! If you call him, "Nelson boy", he will say, "I'm not Nelson boy, I'm Nelson big boy." Or, if he hears you say any number other than three (no matter what you are talking about), he will say, "I'm not (number), Nelson's 3!" As you can see, it can get very annoying. He does say some pretty cute things sometimes, though, with his obsession to correct us.
Last Wednesday night, after reading scriptures, Richard started to explain what he read, "So, you see Nelson. The prophet Samuel..." Nelson interrupted him, "No, Dad! Nelson's not a prophet! Nelson's a child of God!" I don't know how his little ears heard that he was a prophet, but I'm glad he remembered learning he was a child of God in Sunbeams the Sunday before!
The following night, we took the boys to the church to watch the young men play a basketball game against the bishopric. Nelson loved watching the game and "playing" basketball afterwards. Richard went to help Nelson make baskets and then at one point, he threw Nelson up into the air. To that, Nelson responded, "Dad, I'm not a ball. I'm a Nelson!"
Now that I am writing about him, there is so many more blog posts I want to do like: Nelson is a Sunbeam! and Nelson's Taking Gymnastics! And, of course, I so need to write more about my little Bug (Clive). Can you believe he is 8-months-old, already? He is moving all around and eating everything! I even found him standing up in his crib last night! He is growing up way too fast for my liking!
One more funny story. This time it's about Richard and me. I wrote a little about it on facebook and people kept asking to hear the whole story, so I thought it would be easier to write it out on here. First of all, I love to tease Richard, I always have. He's getting better at teasing back or at least going along with my teasing.
So, we were at Ikea last Friday night eating at their food place. It had been a long day, so we were just talking about nonsense and saying silly things to each other and to the kids, when we had this conversation:
R: "Clive, why are there always tears in your eyes? Is it because you have no bottom eyelashes? J-M is that why you are always crying?"
J-M: "No. It's because I'm married to you."
R: "Ouch. That hurt!"
J-M: "No, Richard. I'm the one that cries all the time. I'm the one that's hurt."
Of course, we were smiling the whole time at each other, but we were really good at saying all of this with super serious voices. At that point, the lady who was sitting by us with her back towards us, turns around and says, "That is the most awesome conversation I've ever heard!" I don't know if she was talking about the very last conversation or the other ten minutes of conversation we had been having, but I totally liked it! Go ahead, lady and eavesdrop on me all you want! I know I am so funny... at least I think I am!

So I totally forgot to write about the funniest thing Nelson has said lately! He's been hearing what he wants to hear lately, mostly things about Thomas the Train. Today all the speakers spoke about honesty. Honest in his mind was Thomas. Honesty in his mind was Thomas track? Crazy child! Anyway, last weekend we went to Flour Girl & Dough Boy (a local bakery/cafe) to eat lunch. It's a small place with one bathroom for both girls and boys. Well, Nelson needed to go to the bathroom, so Richard took him. After about five minutes, they were still in the bathroom and their were three people waiting. I went to the door and knocked, Richard opened the door slightly, I told them, "Hurry. There's a line out here.", and left. Richard came out laughing a few minutes later with Nelson. I guess after I shut the door, Nelson said, "There's a lion out there?!" I don't know if he was excited or scared, but at least lion sounds somewhat similar to line. So funny!

CHRISTMAS 2010

We had an almost perfect Christmas this year! I say "almost perfect" because "perfect" would have been seeing my parents and more of my siblings, but I could not be more grateful for the wonderful time we did have and for the people who shared it with us!

After a busy Christmas Eve day, I thought our boys would sleep in (or at least sleep to their 7:00 usual wake up time). Nope. Even at a young age, I guess they both could feel the magic of Christmas! They were both awake at 6:00, ready to go! I think I was always the person who woke up the earliest in my family, so I'm all for waking up early to open presents! Richard wasn't even that hard to wake up this year either.

Nelson with his glowing Buzz Lightyear (I don't know why the pic turned out this way) and other presents from Santa.

Clive trying out his new cruising machine and watching Nelson open a present.

Taking a picture to show Grandma and Grandpa Hill the tent and tunnel Mom bought with the Christmas money they sent! Thanks Grandma and Grandpa!

Clive looking at all the fun presents and trying out his puffs from Santa.

Mom & Dad got some great stuff, too! I can't go a Christmas without getting new party supplies!

Christmas Eve

We had a fabulous Christmas Eve this year!

In the early afternoon, Richard went with our brother-in-law, Jonathan, to see Tron while the boys and I went and hung out at Jonathan and Margaret's house in Orem. They moved here a few months ago from Maryland, and we are so happy they live close!

After the movie, we went to my sister's house to exchange presents and read the Nativity story with them. We tried to get the boys to dress up, but I think we mostly laughed while Adam read the holy account.

After Mary's house, we headed off to Richard's sister's house. Jenn and Dan hosted a great party with plenty of appetizers and soup to eat and lots of Christmas joy. We once again read the Nativity story and this time there were lots of kids to help act it out. We ended up acting out the Nativity three times and every time Nelson was the donkey and Clive was a sheep. I thought my boys were darling little animals!

Uncle Dan reading about the birth of Jesus while others watched the cute kids!

The three wise men looking at the star with Mary, Joseph, the angel, shepherd and sheep in the background.

Nelson "the donkey" pointing at Mary and baby Jesus.
